Deutsche Bahn uses the ICE 2 as a half train consisting of a traction unit, six intermediate coaches and a controller car. If necessary, two half trains are coupled together to form a full set. If possible, the full sets run controller car to controller car in order to achieve the speed of 250 km/h at the ends of the train with the traction units in front. However, the traction unit/controller car or traction unit/traction unit combinations are also possible. The traction units of the 402 class differ from their predecessors mainly with the modified front, which can be opened for coupling. The controller car is also equipped with this front.
